The United Kingdom is known for its world-class medical system, making it a reassuring destination for international students. While studying here, it’s important to understand how the UK healthcare system works and what coverage you’re entitled to. Dukes Education helps students navigate NHS services and choose additional health insurance when required.

Understanding the NHS (National Health Service)
The NHS is the UK’s publicly funded healthcare system, offering safe, modern, and high-quality medical care to residents — including international students.
When you arrive in the UK, you should register with a local GP (General Practitioner). This will be your first point of contact for most medical concerns.
You do not need an NHS number to book an appointment, but you will receive one after you register with a GP.
Why Health Insurance Is Needed in the UK
Most students staying in the UK for 6 months or more are required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)during their visa process.
This fee grants full access to NHS services during your stay.
Health insurance — NHS or private — ensures you are protected from unexpected medical expenses, giving peace of mind while you focus on your studies.
Types of Health Insurance for International Students
1. NHS Coverage
If your course lasts 6 months or longer, the IHS fee gives you access to:
- GP consultations
- Emergency treatment
- Specialist care (with GP referral)
- Mental health support
- Hospital services
This is the primary healthcare option for most international students.
2. Private Health Insurance (Optional)
Some students opt for private insurance to cover:
- Faster specialist consultations
- Dental or vision care
- Services not included in NHS coverage
- Additional support tailored to personal needs
If you have an existing medical insurance policy in your home country, it may be extendable for use in the UK.
